Amaechi vows to end Tinubu’s 2027 Ambition

Former Minister of Transportation and South-South leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has declared his determination to thwart President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in the 2027 general elections.

Addressing a large crowd of supporters at the Port Harcourt International Airport on Wednesday, Amaechi launched a scathing criticism of the Tinubu administration, accusing it of deepening the economic hardship faced by ordinary Nigerians.

“I’m tired of this government,” he said. “If a rich man is spending N4 million on electricity, only God knows how you—the masses—are surviving.”

Amaechi, a two-term former governor of Rivers State, called on residents to throw their support behind the ADC, urging them to register with the party and participate actively in the political process.

“We must stop the writing of results in Rivers,” he declared. “Go and register with ADC and let’s change the system.”

The former minister’s open challenge to President Tinubu sets the stage for what could become a major political showdown in 2027, especially as discontent continues to rise over the state of the nation’s economy and governance.

EFCC drops fraud cases against Oba Otudeko

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has formally withdrawn the 13-count charge filed against Chief Oba Otudeko, CFR, Chairman of Honeywell Group, and three others at the Federal High Court in Lagos. The charges, which stemmed from alleged non-performing loan transactions, had been initiated in January 2025.

This development marks a significant resolution to a case that Chief Otudeko and Honeywell Group had consistently maintained was civil in nature and had been fully resolved as far back as eight years ago.

In a statement issued by Olasumbo Abolaji, counsel to Honeywell Group, the company reiterated its commitment to responsible corporate governance and transparency. The statement emphasized Dr. Otudeko’s contributions to Nigeria’s economic growth and institutional development, highlighting his leadership across banking, industry, and public service—especially during his tenure as Chairman of First Bank.

“Dr. Otudeko has, for over six decades, upheld values of service and stewardship,” the statement read. “This outcome only reaffirms what we have always known, that there was no wrongdoing, and the matter had long been concluded. His legacy of enterprise and nation-building remains untarnished.”

At the court sitting earlier today, EFCC counsel Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, informed the court that after reviewing detailed representations from all parties, including First Bank of Nigeria and the defendants, the Attorney General of the Federation decided to discontinue the case.

Mr. Oyedepo explained that the decision was made in the interest of justice, public policy, and to prevent abuse of the judicial process.

The EFCC’s withdrawal brings clarity to stakeholders in the financial and corporate sectors, reaffirming confidence in Nigeria’s judicial and institutional frameworks. Honeywell Group described the resolution as the closure of a “challenging chapter,” while maintaining that the case had always been a commercial dispute that was legally and conclusively resolved years ago.

Michelle Alozie’s late goal sends Super Falcons to WAFCON final

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have secured their spot in the final of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a dramatic 2-1 semifinal victory over defending champions South Africa, with Michelle Alozie netting a stunning stoppage-time winner on Tuesday night.

The thrilling encounter at the Stade Mohammed V saw the Falcons dominate early proceedings, nearly taking the lead after a misjudged free kick from Alozie forced a fumble from South African goalkeeper Andile Dlamini.

Nigeria’s pressure paid off just before halftime. A penalty was awarded after Bambanani Mbane handled the ball in the box while attempting to stop Folashade Ijamilusi. Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade confidently stepped up and buried the spot-kick to give Nigeria a 1–0 lead going into the break.

South Africa responded strongly in the second half. In the 60th minute, Linda Motlhalo drew Banyana Banyana level from the penalty spot after Osinachi Ohale brought down Hildah Magaia inside the area. It marked the first goal Nigeria conceded in the tournament and briefly shifted momentum in the South Africans’ favor.

Chances continued to flow at both ends. Jennifer Echegini, Esther Okoronkwo, and Chinwendu Ihezuo threatened for Nigeria, while South Africa’s Jermaine Seoposenwe and substitute Noxolo Cesane kept the Nigerian defense on edge. Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie produced key saves, supported by strong defending from Ohale and Ashleigh Plumptre.

A moment of concern came in the 84th minute when Gabriela Salgado suffered a serious leg injury following a set-piece challenge. The distressing scene drew emotional reactions from her teammates and fans alike, with even Nigerian supporters joining in chants of solidarity as she was stretchered off.

With extra time looming, the Super Falcons refused to settle. In the 94th minute, Michelle Alozie delivered a cross from deep into the South African box. Although Deborah Abiodun failed to get a clean touch, her presence disrupted the defense. Fikile Magama couldn’t clear the ball off the line, and it trickled in to hand Nigeria a dramatic last-gasp victory.

The win propels Nigeria into the WAFCON final as they aim to claim a record-extending 10th continental title, reasserting their status as the dominant force in African women’s football after a disappointing fourth-place finish in 2022.

South Africa, who came into the tournament as reigning champions, exit in heartbreak but with pride, though concern remains over Salgado’s injury.

The Super Falcons will now look to crown their impressive run with the trophy as they await their final opponents.

JUST IN: Natasha enters NASS after initial denial by security

The situation has stirred fresh controversy surrounding the Senate’s decision to suspend her, especially in light of the recent court order favoring her reinstatement.

ADC urges Tinubu to appoint substantive Ambassadors without delay

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently appoint substantive ambassadors to represent Nigeria across its foreign missions.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, emphasized that the prolonged delay in naming new ambassadors could further strain Nigeria’s diplomatic relations and hurt citizens living abroad.

Abdullahi noted that since the federal government recalled Nigeria’s 109 ambassadors in 2023, the positions have remained vacant, leaving the country with limited or no representation in critical international engagements.

“The absence of appointed ambassadors has weakened Nigeria’s voice and presence on the global stage,” Abdullahi stated. “We are already witnessing serious consequences, such as the rise in visa-related and consular issues involving countries like the United States and the United Arab Emirates.”

He stressed that junior diplomats or charge d’affaires cannot effectively perform the roles of ambassadors due to their limited access and recognition in diplomatic circles.

According to the ADC, this leadership vacuum is already taking a toll on the welfare of Nigerian students, workers, and professionals residing abroad. The party also warned that the situation could prompt other nations to reciprocate by downgrading their diplomatic missions in Nigeria.

Abdullahi concluded by urging President Tinubu to act swiftly, warning that the delay undermines Nigeria’s global image at a time when the country should be aggressively pursuing economic diplomacy and international cooperation.

Obidients beg Atiku to step aside for Obi in 2027

Supporters of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, popularly known as “Obidients,” have appealed to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to shelve his reported ambition for the 2027 presidential election and instead support Obi to secure the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The appeal was made during a massive birthday rally held in honour of Obi’s 64th birthday across several towns in Abia State, including Umuahia, Aba, Ohafia, and Uzuakoli. The event, described as a “one million man march for Obi,” attracted large crowds of supporters who praised Obi’s leadership qualities and called for national unity around his candidacy.

Speaking to journalists in Umuahia, Dr. Chibuzor Obiesili, the Abia State Chairman of the Organising Committee and one of the Obidient coordinators in the state, urged Atiku to make a personal sacrifice in the interest of national development by stepping aside and supporting Obi’s presidential bid in 2027.

Obiesili acknowledged Atiku’s long-standing contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey but insisted that Obi has the national appeal, integrity, and capacity to address Nigeria’s challenges swiftly. He emphasized that Obi’s clean track record and reputation for transparency make him the ideal candidate to lead the country out of its current socio-economic struggles.

While commending Atiku and other opposition leaders for forming a coalition against President Bola Tinubu’s expected re-election bid, Obiesili urged the coalition to zone its presidential ticket to the South and rally behind Obi, whom he described as the candidate with the best chance of defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He stated that Obi’s consistent advocacy for the downtrodden and his leadership style have won him massive support across religious, ethnic, and political divides. According to Obiesili, Obi represents hope for millions of Nigerians and has become a symbol of integrity in Nigerian politics.

He added that the birthday rally was not sponsored by any politician but was a voluntary show of love and support for a man many Nigerians believe can bring meaningful change.

Kemi Badenoch: My kids couldn’t get citizenship in Nigeria, but Nigerians easily get UK citizenship

The United Kingdom’s Conservative Party leader, Kemi Badenoch, has sparked fresh debate on immigration policies after revealing that her children are unable to obtain Nigerian citizenship due to her gender—despite many Nigerians securing British citizenship with ease.

In a recent interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, Badenoch criticized what she described as the UK’s overly lenient immigration system, comparing it with stricter policies in countries like Nigeria.

“There are many people who come to our country, to the UK, who do things that would not be acceptable in their countries,” she said.

When asked if she would support Nigerian immigrants in recreating a “mini-Nigeria” in the UK under the guise of cultural integration, she firmly responded: “That is not right. Nigerians would not tolerate that. That’s not something that many countries would accept.”

Badenoch, who is of Nigerian descent, used her personal experience to highlight what she called a double standard. According to her, while she holds Nigerian citizenship through her parents, she cannot pass it on to her children simply because she is a woman.

“It’s virtually impossible, for example, to get Nigerian citizenship. I have that citizenship by virtue of my parents. I can’t give it to my children because I’m a woman,” she said. “Yet loads of Nigerians come to the UK, stay for a relatively free period of time, and acquire British citizenship. We need to stop being naive.”

The Conservative leader, who has three children with her husband, Hamish Badenoch, declared that she would make acquiring British citizenship “a lot harder” if elected Prime Minister.

Born in London in 1980 to Yoruba parents, Badenoch spent a significant part of her early years in Nigeria before returning to the UK at 16. Her political journey has seen her serve under Prime Ministers Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak in various cabinet roles between 2022 and 2024.

Astronomer CEO Andy Byron resigns after viral Coldplay Concert video

A U.S.-based tech company has announced the resignation of its CEO following the circulation of a viral video showing him in an apparent embrace with a colleague during a Coldplay concert.

Astronomer, the company in question, confirmed in a public statement that Andy Byron had submitted his resignation, which the board has accepted.

The footage, captured on a large screen at a Coldplay show in Foxborough, Massachusetts, depicted a man and a woman hugging before seemingly realizing they were on camera and quickly ducking out of view. U.S. media identified the pair as Byron, who is reportedly married, and Kristin Cabot, the firm’s chief people officer.

In its statement released on Saturday, Astronomer emphasized its commitment to upholding its core values and workplace standards.

“Our leaders are expected to model the highest standards of behavior and accountability. In this case, those expectations were not met,” the company said.

With Byron stepping down, the company’s chief product officer will continue to serve as interim CEO while a formal search for a new leader is conducted.

The brief moment at the concert—where the pair swayed to the music and then abruptly ducked—quickly gained traction online, garnering millions of views.

On stage, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin joked, “Either they’re having an affair, or they’re just very shy,” in response to the couple’s reaction.

Following the clip’s rapid spread online, Astronomer initiated an internal review and placed Byron on leave, leading up to his decision to resign.
