Presidency fires back at ADC over Buhari’s state funeral remarks

The Nigerian Presidency has fired back at the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for condemning the state burial accorded to former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the opposition party’s remarks as “dishonest, opportunistic, and politically desperate.”

In a strongly worded statement issued in Abuja, Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communications, dismissed ADC’s comments as baseless and designed to gain political relevance.

“The latest outburst from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) regarding former President Buhari’s state burial is nothing but an opportunistic exercise in manufactured outrage. It’s a laughable tantrum by a poorly amalgamated political contraption desperately clutching at straws for relevance it will never attain,” Dare said.

The ADC had earlier accused the Tinubu-led administration of politicising Buhari’s burial, a claim the Presidency firmly rejected. According to Dare, it is the ADC, not the government, that is trying to exploit Buhari’s death for political mileage.

“They have chosen to dance on his grave for relevance,” he stated, referencing what he described as the ADC’s “shameless” attempt to score points from a solemn national event.

He also criticised the presence of political figures like Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El-Rufai at Buhari’s funeral in Daura, claiming their arrival was “choreographed” to stir political sentiments.

Buhari’s Burial Was Dignified – Presidency

The statement emphasized that Buhari was accorded a dignified and honourable state burial, which drew attention from world leaders and millions of Nigerians. It dismissed the ADC’s critique as “sanctimonious whining.”

“World leaders showed up, millions tuned in, and even ADC promoters pranced around Daura like eager real estate agents,” Dare added.

Highlighting achievements under President Tinubu, Dare noted: A stabilised naira, increased oil output, revitalised state finances via improved FAAC allocations, the launch of the student loan scheme.

“These are not press statements. These are results, tangible, measurable, and ongoing,” he said, stressing that the government is focused on the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Dare concluded by questioning the ADC’s political relevance, calling it a party plagued by internal divisions and legal troubles, and urged Nigerians to ignore what he described as the “noise from a party gasping for attention.”

Company confirms investigation into CEO’s viral Coldplay Concert video

U.S.-based tech company Astronomer has confirmed it has launched a formal investigation after a video taken at a recent Coldplay concert went viral, sparking widespread speculation about the conduct of the company’s CEO, Andy Byron.

The controversy began when concertgoers recorded a couple spotted on the big screen during Coldplay’s performance. Their reaction quickly went viral, especially after lead singer Chris Martin jokingly commented on stage that the pair might be having an “affair.” The remark, though made in jest, fueled online speculation and triggered deeper scrutiny as users attempted to identify the individuals involved.

On Friday, July 18, Astronomer addressed the situation with a statement shared on the company’s LinkedIn page, saying:

“Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding. Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability.”

Dangote Refinery suspends Petrol Discount Scheme over alleged misuse by partners

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has officially suspended its strategic partner petrol discount scheme following allegations that some accredited partners were abusing their Authority to Collect (ATC) rights by reselling them to unauthorized marketers.

The ATC is a legal right given to select partners, allowing them to lift petroleum products directly from the refinery at a discounted rate. However, investigations revealed that several partners were allegedly reselling these rights at the refinery gate, enabling unauthorized third parties to lift Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) below the official ex-gantry price.

In a letter signed by Fatima Dangote, Group Executive Director, Commercial Operations, the company described the development as a serious breach of trust. The letter, seen by News Access NG, noted that despite repeated engagements with strategic partners, the violations persisted.

“Over the last few months, DPRP has received unprecedented complaints of partners selling their ATCs below the prevailing PMS gantry product price,” the statement read. “It has become a matter of grave concern to the refinery as it threatens the sustainability of our operations.”

As a result, the management has suspended the discounted pricing scheme effective July 13, 2025, pending a full restructuring of the initiative. However, the refinery clarified that existing Product Release Notes (PRNs) issued at the partner rate will remain valid. Also, any partner who made payment before the suspension will still receive the agreed pricing.

“Recommended pump prices across retail stations should still be adhered to,” the refinery cautioned, emphasizing that price discipline must be maintained across its supply network.

While assuring partners of its continued commitment to collaboration, the Dangote Group said it is exploring new reward-based schemes that will soon be unveiled to replace the suspended program.

The discounted pricing scheme was initially launched to improve affordability and accessibility of refined products across Nigeria. But recent violations have undermined the refinery’s pricing structure and raised concerns over transparency in product distribution.

Earlier this month, the Dangote Refinery welcomed a new wave of oil marketers into its distribution network. These include TotalEnergies, Garima Petroleum, Sunbeth Energies, Sobaz Nigeria Ltd, Virgin Forest Energy, Sixxco Oil Ltd, NU Synergy Ltd, and Soroman Nigeria Ltd.

Existing strategic partners such as MRS Oil, Heyden Petroleum, Ardova Plc, Hyde Energy, Optima Energy, and Techno Oil remain part of the supply chain.

Yahaya Bello weds fourth wife Hiqma in Abuja private ceremony

Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has taken a new wife, Hiqma, marking his fourth marriage in a private ceremony held over the weekend in Abuja.

The intimate event was attended by close friends and family members. Confirmation of the union came through a heartwarming post by Bello’s third wife, Hafiza Yahaya Bello, on Instagram.

“Our family just got a little bigger and more loving,” Hafiza wrote, warmly welcoming Hiqma into the family. She also offered prayers for peace and continued blessings in their home.

Yahaya Bello, who served as governor of Kogi State from 2016 to 2023 under the All Progressives Congress (APC), is already married to Amina Oyiza Bello, Rashida Yahaya Bello, and Hafiza Bello.

Despite his prominent role in Nigerian politics, Bello is known for keeping his family life relatively private. His latest marriage signals a new chapter in his personal journey following the end of his gubernatorial tenure.

The former governor is an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Business Administration.

Yahaya Bello’s passport not with us – FCT Court

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja has clarified that it does not have custody of the international passport of former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, amid an ongoing money laundering case involving the ex-governor.

Justice Maryanne Anenih, presiding over the matter, made the clarification during Thursday’s proceedings in the N110 billion fraud case filed against Bello by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The court was expected to rule on an application by Bello seeking the release of his international passport to enable him to travel for medical treatment. However, Justice Anenih declared the application incompetent, stressing that the travel document was not in the custody of the FCT High Court, but rather with the Federal High Court in Abuja.

“The international passport cannot be in two places at the same time,” she said, dismissing the notion that the document could be retrieved from the FCT court.

The judge noted that the bail conditions issued to Bello required him to submit his international passport or swear an affidavit if the passport was in the possession of another court. Bello had deposed an affidavit stating that the travel document was currently with the Deputy Registrar of the Federal High Court, where he faces a separate criminal charge.

The court also pointed out that although earlier court records seemed to show the passport was to be deposited with the registry of the FCT High Court, a review confirmed that it was never submitted to the court.

Justice Anenih emphasized that, had the passport been in the FCT court’s custody, the application might have been granted after due consideration.

Background: Yahaya Bello, along with Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, was arraigned on November 27, 2024, on a 16-count charge bordering on alleged misappropriation of public funds and property fraud totalling ₦110 billion.

The defence counsel, Joseph Daudu, SAN, had urged the court to grant Bello’s request based on medical grounds, arguing that his client needed to travel for urgent health care. Daudu supported the application with a 22-paragraph affidavit deposed by the former governor.

However, the EFCC filed a counter-affidavit, urging the court to reject the application on the grounds that Bello is facing serious criminal charges and might jump bail if allowed to travel.

Following Thursday’s proceedings, Justice Anenih adjourned the trial to October 8, 2025, for continuation.

Tinubu Orders Flags at Half-Staff in Honour of Buhari

President Bola Tinubu has directed that all national flags be flown at half-staff to honour the late former president, Muhammadu Buhari.

Flying a flag at half-staff is a symbolic gesture of mourning and respect, traditionally observed following the death of prominent national figures or during periods of national sorrow. The lowered flag signifies solemn remembrance and, in some interpretations, leaves space above for an “invisible flag of death.”

In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu expressed his condolences to the former first lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari.
