Tinubu to meet Trump over alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria – Presidency

The Presidency has confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in the coming days to discuss allegations of a Christian genocide in Nigeria.

The planned meeting follows recent comments by Trump accusing the Nigerian government of failing to protect Christians from targeted attacks.

Trump had threatened military action against Nigeria and warned that the United States could suspend aid to the country over alleged persecution of Christians.

Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, disclosed the development in a post on X on Saturday.

According to him, the discussions will center on strengthening counterterrorism cooperation and addressing misconceptions about the nature of terrorist attacks in Nigeria.

“Both President @officialABAT and President @realDonaldTrump have shared interests in the fight against insurgency and all forms of terrorism against humanity,” Bwala wrote.

He added: “President Trump has assisted Nigeria a lot by authorising the sale of arms, and President Tinubu has adequately utilised that opportunity in the fight against terrorism, with massive results to show for it.

“As for the differences as to whether terrorists in Nigeria target only Christians or all faiths, those would be discussed and resolved by the two leaders when they meet in the coming days, either in the State House or White House.”

Tinubu appoints new Service Chiefs in major military reshuffle

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a sweeping reorganization of the Armed Forces, appointing new Service Chiefs in a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s national security architecture.

According to a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Chief Sunday Dare, the President named former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede, as the new Chief of Defence Staff, replacing General Christopher Musa.

The new appointments include Major-General W. Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff. The Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye, retains his position.

Chief Dare noted that all appointments take immediate effect.

President Tinubu, who also serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, expressed appreciation to the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, General Musa, and other retired Service Chiefs for their “patriotic service and dedicated leadership” during their tenure.

He urged the newly appointed military heads to justify the confidence reposed in them by upholding “enhanced professionalism, vigilance, and comradeship” in the discharge of their duties.

The shake-up in the military hierarchy is part of the Tinubu administration’s broader efforts to reposition the security sector, strengthen inter-service coordination, and sustain progress in the fight against terrorism, banditry, and other security threats across the country.

Tanker explosion kills 35, injures 46 in Niger – FRSC

No fewer than 35 persons have been feared dead, while 46 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a petrol tanker explosion on Bida–Agaie expressway, at Essa village in Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State.

Hajiya Aishatu Sa’adu,  Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Niger Command, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Minna.

Sa’adu said that the tragedy occurred when some residents attempted to scoop fuel from the fallen tanker, which later exploded.

She said the injured victims were evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Bida, with the support of FRSC personnel, villagers, and some good Nigeria.

According to her, preliminary investigations revealed that the crash was a lone accident resulting from loss of control by the tanker driver.

The sector commander cautioned motorists to exercise utmost care and adhere strictly to traffic regulations to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.

She also warned members of the public against scooping fuel from accident scenes, describing it as a dangerous act that had claimed many lives in the past.

“It is God that gives wealth. People should avoid greed and be content with what God has given them,” she added.

An eyewitness told NAN that the accident occurred around 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Essan/Badeggi communities on the Bida–Agaie road in Katcha Local Government Area.

“It was gathered that the victims were scooping fuel from the fallen tanker when it suddenly exploded, burning many beyond recognition, while others sustained severe burns,” the witness said.

Also confirming the incident, Mr Farouk Kawo, the Niger State Chairman of the Tanker Drivers Association and National Ex-Officio of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), said the tanker was conveying petroleum product from Lagos to the northern part of the country.

Kawo noted that more than 30 tankers had been involved in accidents on the same route in October alone, attributing the frequent crashes to the deplorable condition of the road.

“The community youths have continued to scoop products from accidented vehicles. Just last Sunday, a tanker conveying groundnut oil also crashed and its contents were scooped,” he said.

He appealed to the Niger Government, under the leadership of Gov. Mohammed Bago, to urgently intervene by grading the bad portions of the road to ease movement and reduce accidents.

“If the bad spots are repaired, it will go a long way in preventing further loss of lives and property,” Kawo added.

Ohanaeze Lagos backs Tinubu’s 2027 bid

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo community in Lagos State on Monday expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s re-election prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Chief Sunday Udeh, the President General of the socio-cultural group, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

He spoke during a reconciliation parley convened by Dr Abdul-Azeez Adediran (Jandor), Lead Visioner of the Lagos4Lagos Movement, with Igbo leaders over recent demolitions in the state.

Udeh called on Yorubas and Igbos to coexist peacefully, stressing the need to avoid animosity and bitterness between both ethnic groups.

He said President Tinubu deserved a second term in 2027, describing him as “a man who knows the game”.

“We are not in doubt of his victory in 2027. We know our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), will win,” Udeh said.

He urged the Lagos State Government to continue supporting the Ndigbo and other ethnic communities, giving them a sense of belonging in the state.

According to him, relations between Ndigbos and the Lagos government became strained after the 2023 general elections.

“2027 is close. We know our party will take it. I am a member and will work for the party,” he added.

Deacon Charles Obih, National President of the Market Leaders Association of Nigeria (TMLAN), said Igbos in Lagos would ensure Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

“We will move around to make sure the re-election of President Tinubu is seamless by the grace of God,” Obih said.

Chief Ebere Odikonaba, former Woman Leader of Ndigbo in APC, Oshodi-Isolo, said the Igbos had no other party than the APC.

He described Tinubu as a capable leader who inherited longstanding national challenges but has performed commendably.

“To be frank, if God had not brought a man like him, we do not know where this country would be today,” he added.

Dr Okey Anorue, Eze Ndigbo of Igbogbo/Bayeku and Babaloja of Tejuosho Market, called for a change in the narrative about Igbo–Yoruba relations in Lagos.

Anorue said the bond between both groups must be strengthened before the 2027 elections to prevent politics from creating divisions.

He urged Igbos not to allow themselves to be used by politicians to stir conflict with their Yoruba hosts.

“We need a peaceful environment. They are our hosts, and we must respect their culture. When in Rome, behave like the Romans,” he said.

Chief Amaka Chibuzor, Ndigbo Women Leader, Coker Aguda, said the aim of Igbo women in Lagos was to ensure Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

She described the APC as the strongest party and advised Igbos in Lagos to join what she called “the winning team”.

Mrs Uju Ofohre, an APC women leader from Ejigbo LCDA, urged Ndigbo women to reciprocate the kindness shown by Yorubas through political support.

“The Yorubas have shown us love. We must return that love by supporting the APC and coming out en masse in 2027,” she said.

Ofohre also appealed to Ndigbo women to back whoever emerges as the APC governorship candidate in Lagos State.

EPL: Maguire’s late header seals Man United’s first Anfield win in nearly a decade

Harry Maguire’s late header earned Manchester United a dramatic 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, ending the Red Devils’ nine-year wait for a win at the iconic ground and handing Liverpool their fourth straight defeat.

Cody Gakpo appeared to have rescued Liverpool from their losing streak when he struck with 12 minutes left, but Maguire rose highest six minutes from time to power a header past goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, sealing a memorable win for Ruben Amorim’s men.

United stunned the home crowd by taking the lead inside two minutes in controversial circumstances, after referee Michael Oliver allowed play to continue despite Alexis Mac Allister lying prone with a head injury from a collision with teammate Virgil van Dijk. Brentford loanee Bryan Mbeumo capitalised on the chaos, slotting past Mamardashvili, who stood in for the injured Alisson.

Liverpool pressed relentlessly, with Gakpo hitting the woodwork three times — twice before the break and once more in the second half — before finally finding the net from close range. However, his effort wasn’t enough to prevent another disappointing result for Jürgen Klopp’s side.

Bruno Fernandes had a golden opportunity to double United’s early advantage but fired wide, while new Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens impressed between the posts, producing a key save to deny Alexander Isak.

In a thrilling second half, United held firm under pressure, and Maguire’s decisive header capped a resilient display that saw them claim their first win at Anfield since January 2016.

For Liverpool, the defeat marked a worrying milestone — their fourth consecutive loss and their worst run of form since November 2014, during the Brendan Rodgers era.

According to the statement, the summit has the theme: “Blue Economy, Green Money: Financing Africa’s Coastal Resilience and Ocean Innovation.”

It said the event would serve as a strategic platform to accelerate action and investment in Africa’s coastal and ocean economies ahead of the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference.

The statement said Lagos would remain committed to driving sustainable growth through innovation and investment in climate resilience.

“As Africa’s fastest-growing coastal city, Lagos stands at the frontline of both climate risk and innovation.

“The Lagos International Climate Change Summit 2025 is more than a conference; it is a declaration that African cities can finance their own future,” it said.

English, Mathematics remain compulsory for all O’level students — FG

The Federal Government has reaffirmed that English Language and Mathematics remain compulsory subjects for all students sitting for their O’Level examinations.

This clarification was made in a statement issued on Sunday by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, Boriowo Folasade.

According to the statement, the ministry emphasized that the recently introduced policy on tertiary admission requirements does not exempt any student from registering or sitting for the two core subjects.

It reads: “The Federal Ministry of Education has clarified that all students must continue to register and sit for English Language and Mathematics in their O-Level examinations. The new policy does not exempt any candidate from these core subjects but rather introduces a more inclusive and flexible approach to tertiary admission requirements.

“The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, explained that the reform promotes fairness and inclusiveness in tertiary education by ensuring that capable students are not denied admission due to deficiencies in non-core subjects.

“The streamlining of O-Level admission guidelines aims to modernize Nigeria’s education system and align it with global best practices. It allows institutions to admit candidates into specific programmes where credit passes in either English or Mathematics may not be compulsory, while still mandating that all students register and sit for both subjects.

“This reform supports the Federal Government’s vision of equitable access, inclusivity, and human capital development, broadening academic pathways and recognizing diverse strengths among learners.

“English and Mathematics remain vital tools for communication, reasoning, and lifelong learning. The adjustment affects only admission criteria, not the requirement to take these subjects.

“The Ministry urges students, parents, and stakeholders to rely solely on official communication channels for verified policy updates.”
