BNaija: I’m not mentally ready to be Head of House – Kuture

Big Brother Naija Season 10 housemate, Kuture, has said he is not mentally prepared to take on the role of Head of House (HOH) just yet.

Speaking with show host Ebuka Obi-Uchendu during Sunday’s live eviction show, Kuture admitted that the leadership position comes with overwhelming responsibilities that he is not currently ready to handle. He compared managing fellow housemates to “controlling animals,” suggesting it requires a high level of patience and authority.

“HOH comes with a lot of responsibilities. It is easier to control animals than human beings,” Kuture said. “Some housemates don’t even respect the HOH, and I am not mentally ready for that yet.”

Kuture said his reluctance was also influenced by how past HOH, Jason Jae, was treated, citing the lack of respect shown to him during his reign.

He noted that he would consider stepping up for the position by Week 4, when some housemates would have been evicted and the dynamics in the house might be easier to manage.

7 delicious ways you can enjoy more fresh vegetables daily

Vegetables are such a rich source of vitamins, minerals and fiber. They play a vital role in maintaining good health as they are low in calories and fat; contributing to various aspects of well-being, including improved digestion, reduced risk in chronic diseases, and better weight management.

Eating enough fresh vegetables is crucial for a healthy lifestyle, and it can actually be tastier than you think, especially with Nigeria’s abundant fresh produce.

Here are 7 delicious ways you can incorporate more vibrant, wholesome goodness into your daily menus.

1. Elevate Your Soups and Stews: This is the usual way you know to add vegetables to your meals. But beyond the usual, you can add extra leafy greens like ugu (fluted pumpkin), shoko, efo, or even a handful of chopped spinach or kale to your egusi, ogbono, or even light soup. Don’t forget bell peppers, carrots, and spring onions for extra flavor and nutrients. Nigerian soups are already vegetable-heavy; simply upping the quantity and variety makes a significant difference without altering the core dish.

2. Boost Your Rice and Pasta Dishes: You can turn your Jollof rice, fried rice, or even a simple white rice accompaniment into a veggie powerhouse. Sauté a medley of diced carrots, green beans, sweet corn, peas, and bell peppers, then stir them in. For pasta, add zucchini, eggplant, or mushrooms to your sauce. These additions provide texture, color, and a nutrient punch, making familiar dishes more exciting and wholesome.

3. Reinvent Your Breakfast Eggs: Whether you’re making scrambled eggs, an omelette, or egg sauce, load it with finely chopped tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, spinach, or even shredded cabbage. This is a quick and easy way to start your day with a serving of vegetables, adding freshness and flavor to a breakfast staple.

4. Make More Salad a Main Event (or a Strong Side): Go beyond the basic coleslaw. Combine lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, carrots, and bell peppers. Add some boiled eggs, grilled chicken or fish, or even boli (roasted plantain) for a more filling meal. Drizzle with a light vinaigrette or a homemade dressing. Salads offer raw, unadulterated nutrients and can be incredibly refreshing, especially in Nigeria’s climate.

5. Snack Smart with Veggie Sticks and Dips: Cut carrots, cucumbers, bell peppers (various colours), and even garden eggs into easy-to-munch sticks. Pair them with a healthy dip like groundnut paste thinned with a little water and spices, or a simple homemade avocado dip. It’s a convenient and crunchy alternative to processed snacks, providing fiber and vitamins. Perfect for mid-day cravings.

6. Incorporate Them into Your Swallows (Eba, Fufu, Amala): While your soup already has vegetables, consider side dishes. A small bowl of lightly steamed or sautéed greens like tete or ugwu can accompany your main soup and swallow. Or, finely grate vegetables like carrots into your amala flour before preparation for a subtle addition. This method subtly increases your vegetable intake with dishes that are central to Nigerian cuisine.

7. Grill or Roast Them for a Flavorful Side: Slice eggplant, bell peppers, onions, zucchini, and even large mushrooms. Toss them with a little olive oil, salt, pepper, and your favourite Nigerian spices (like a touch of yaji for a kick), then grill or roast until tender and slightly caramelized. Grilling or roasting brings out the natural sweetness of vegetables, creating a delicious and satisfying side dish for grilled fish, chicken, or even rice.

By trying these simple yet effective methods, you can easily and deliciously boost your daily vegetable intake, leading to a healthier and more vibrant lifestyle!

Presidency slams Peter Obi’s one-term pledge as ‘deceitful’

The Presidency has dismissed Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi’s renewed pledge to serve only one term if elected president, describing it as deceitful and inconsistent with his political history.

In a strongly worded statement on Sunday, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, accused Obi of a pattern of broken promises and questioned his credibility to lead Nigeria.

Obi had, earlier on Sunday, restated via social media that he would serve just one term if elected president — a vow Onanuga claimed lacked sincerity.

“Peter Obi, the liar, is exposed again,” Onanuga wrote on his verified X handle, @aonanuga1956. “You’re neither a Mandela nor a Lincoln or a Kennedy. You sound as if you have never held an elected office before. You sought re-election as Anambra Governor in 2010 and narrowly won courtesy of a divided opposition. Why didn’t you walk away after only one term?”

He further questioned Obi’s performance in Anambra, arguing that the state showed no significant transformation after his eight years in office.

Onanuga also reminded Nigerians of Obi’s past political moves, particularly his defection from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), despite publicly vowing never to leave the party.

“You talk about trust, but how do you expect people to trust someone who can’t keep a simple promise not to leave a political party?” Onanuga stated. “If we’re to make allowance for excuses, you’ll definitely have an excuse to break your one-term vow.”

The renewed political exchange adds to the ongoing tensions between Obi and the Presidency as the 2027 general election draws closer.

Tinubu has been fair to all regions – Umahi

Minister of Works, David Umahi, has declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ensured equitable distribution of road infrastructure projects across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

Reacting to a social media post by Linus Anagboso, popularly known as D-Big Pen, titled “The Politics of Asphalt: Why is the South East missing from the map?”, Umahi described the claims as misleading and politically motivated.

In a statement personally signed by him on Monday in Abuja, Umahi said the Tinubu administration has not neglected any part of the country, including the South East. He accused some political actors of attempting to mislead the public by distorting facts for selfish gain.

“I understand that politics is now in the air and the chosen path by some persons is to deceive unsuspecting members of the public, look good before the people as one fighting for them, and close both eyes pretentiously over the great and selfless infrastructure development Mr. President is doing all over the nation,” Umahi said.

He noted that President Tinubu’s administration is using infrastructure development as a tool to unify Nigerians and restore public trust. To further demonstrate transparency, Umahi disclosed that he had directed all regional directors of the Federal Ministry of Works to return to project sites across the country and compile reports of both inherited and newly awarded projects for public awareness.

Addressing claims that the South East is excluded from major projects, Umahi cited one of President Tinubu’s four legacy road projects, which covers Cross River, Ebonyi, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Abuja. According to him, the 465-kilometre dual carriageway includes 231.64 kilometres located within the South East. The project, valued at ₦445.8 billion, has already received ₦108 billion in funding, with work currently ongoing.

He also criticized Anagboso for allegedly misrepresenting details from the July 31 Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, where the project corridor was reviewed. Umahi said the writer falsely labelled the project as the “Oyo–Benue Border road” to mislead the public and incite discontent in the South East.

“I demand that he corrects the information immediately, even if he fails to apologize,” Umahi stated.

The minister listed several other ongoing projects in the South East, including work on the Second Niger Bridge access roads in Delta and Anambra states, the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, Enugu-Port Harcourt Road, and several intra-regional roads linking Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, and Akwa Ibom.

He stressed that over 90 percent of abandoned road projects in the region, some dating as far back as 2013, have been revived by the current administration.

Umahi called on the people of the South East to show appreciation by supporting President Tinubu politically, urging them to reject divisive rhetoric and misinformation.

“We must not be deceived again. Mr. President must have the votes of South East up to 90 percent to cement this relationship,” he said. “Enough of darkening counsel without knowledge in the South East. If we want to be president, we must avoid the politics of hate, misinformation, and sentiments.”

He further praised the South East governors for supporting development efforts in their states and urged the public to rally behind them and President Tinubu for continuity and national unity.

“We are known for hard work and love—not hate,” Umahi said.

Breastfeeding: UNICEF advocates inclusive support systems for working mothers

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has called for urgent action to create sustainable and inclusive community-based support systems that prioritise breastfeeding, especially in underserved areas.

Mr Muhammad Okorie, UNICEF’s Social Policy Manager and Officer-in-Charge of the Lagos Field Office, made the call in Benin on Monday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Okorie spoke as Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark the 2025 World Breastfeeding Week with the theme “Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems.”

He stressed that enabling mothers to exclusively breastfeed their babies was not just a matter of personal choice, but a systemic issue requiring the commitment of multiple stakeholders.

”There is a critical need to strengthen systems that support mothers to breastfeed successfully. We must ensure that this system exists, from the family to religious institutions, healthcare systems, workplaces and communities, every actor must play a role,” he said.

According to him, while UNICEF plays a catalytic role in advocating for child health and nutrition, breastfeeding outcomes are shaped significantly by social norms and cultural practices.

”Some mother-in-laws still insist newborns be given water, even when science has shown that breast milk alone contains all the nutrients; water and antibodies a baby needs in the first six months.

”The entire community must ensure that harmful practices are challenged, and the breastfeeding environment is enabled.”

The UNICEF’s Social Policy Manager revealed that the organisation had been supporting the government at federal, state, and local levels to raise awareness, bust myths, and train health workers on how best to support mothers.

Okorie also said that the agency worked with antenatal and postpartum services to ensure mothers get practical support through their breastfeeding journey.

”One of the key policy areas UNICEF is championing is the extension of paid maternity leave across both public and private sectors.

”Some states like Lagos have reviewed maternity leave duration from four to six months, which is commendable, however, the private sector is often left out.

”This week is a perfect opportunity to advocate for inclusive legislation that ensures private-sector employees also benefit,” he said.

He added that even when women return to work, workplaces should offer breastfeeding-friendly environments.

”Many organisations don’t have breastfeeding rooms or crèches, which adds to the burden of nursing mothers.

”There’s a need for peer support groups, breastfeeding corners, and enabling work spaces. All of this is essential to help women meet the target of exclusive breastfeeding,”he further said.

Okorie also stressed the importance of early initiation, adding that a child deserved and had the right to be put to the breast within the first one hour of birth.

”That first breast milk is not just food, it is the child’s first vaccine and the first bond of love,” he said.
