I have no regrets working against Jonathan in 2015 – Amaechi

Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has said he has no regrets over his role in the removal of former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015, describing it as a necessary step to “save Nigeria” at the time.

Speaking on Friday during an X Space session titled Weekend Politics, Amaechi dismissed speculations about Jonathan’s possible return in the 2027 presidential race, arguing the former leader has little to offer beyond a single term.

“I don’t regret removing GEJ. In fact, I should be praised for saving Nigeria then, just like I am trying to save Nigeria now.

“I heard he wants to run again. What does he bring to the table aside from having only four years to serve?” Amaechi stated.

He also revealed that he and former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, conceived the idea of the coalition that eventually led to Jonathan’s defeat.

Court acquits Medical Doctor of cybercrime charges

The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed cybercrime charges filed by the Inspector-General of Police against a female medical doctor, Bolanle Aseyan.

Delivering judgment on Friday, Justice Peter Lifu discharged and acquitted Aseyan, stating that the police failed to prove the essential elements of the alleged offences.

The Inspector-General had arraigned Aseyan on a four-count charge of defamation, harassment, and intimidation against another doctor, Olufunmilayo Ogunsanya.

The police alleged that Aseyan used social media platforms to harm Ogunsanya’s reputation. He was said to be her former boyfriend.

The charges were filed under Section 24 of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention) Act, which addresses online threats and cyber harassment.

To support the case, the police presented three witnesses. Aseyan also called two witnesses to testify in her defence during the trial.

Justice Lifu, while reviewing the matter, noted both doctors were once in a romantic relationship before it turned sour.

He further observed that the two had sexual relations while in the United Kingdom and later made conflicting social media posts against each other.

The judge held that the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt and therefore could not secure a conviction.

Specifically, the judge said the defendant’s alleged Twitter handle used in the cyberbullying was not tendered as evidence before the court.

Justice Lifu also said there was no proof of threats or intimidation, but rather evidence of a previous affectionate relationship.

Consequently, the judge dismissed all four charges, discharged and acquitted Aseyan, and declared the case closed.

He ordered the police to immediately return all seized items, including her international passport, upon service of the judgment.

Aseyan said she met Ogunsanya online in 2019 and travelled to the United Kingdom in 2020, where she claimed she was raped.

She stated that upon arrival in Leeds on March 7, 2020, tired and disoriented, Ogunsanya offered her wine shortly after she got to his home.

She alleged that after taking the drink, she passed out and later woke up to find that he had allegedly had sex with her without consent.

Aseyan further claimed that Ogunsanya maltreated her before she returned to Nigeria shortly after the alleged incident.

UK politicians should focus on British issues, not Nigeria – Kemi Badenoch

UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has urged politicians in the United Kingdom to prioritise domestic issues over foreign matters, including those relating to Nigeria.

Speaking in an interview with GB News, Badenoch emphasised that her main identity is British, despite her Nigerian ancestry and early upbringing. She said the BBC had slightly misrepresented her earlier remarks but maintained that her focus remains on the UK.

“My main identity is as British. That is what I see myself as,” she explained. “As a politician in this country, we need to be very focused on what is happening here, not what’s happening elsewhere. And every day, I see loads of Labour MPs in particular talking about every other country except the UK.”

Badenoch criticised what she described as a growing tendency among some lawmakers to comment more on international affairs than on domestic challenges, insisting that integration and commitment to British values should be a priority.

“If you come to this country, you need to be very focused on making sure that you integrate. And if you’re a politician, you need to be 100% focused on British issues. And that’s basically what I was saying,” she added.

Her comments also echo a recent statement on the Rosebud podcast, where she disclosed that she had not renewed her Nigerian passport in over 20 years and no longer considers herself Nigerian by identity.

“I’m Nigerian through ancestry, by birth, despite not being born there because of my parents. But by identity, I’m not really. I know the country very well, I have a lot of family there, and I’m very interested in what happens there,” she said during the August 1 episode.

Badenoch’s remarks have sparked fresh debate on the role of identity and foreign policy focus in British politics.

Experts caution adults over 40 on consumption of cold drinks

Medical and nutritional experts have advised adults aged 40 and above to exercise moderation in the consumption of cold beverages, citing possible health implications in certain conditions.

The experts made the recommendations in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abakaliki.

They noted that while cold drinks are generally safe and hydrating, they could trigger discomfort or worsen symptoms in individuals with underlying medical challenges.

They spoke against the backdrop of the prevailing cold weather occasioned by persistent rainfall and the penchant of many older adults to consume chilled beverages despite the low temperatures.

Dr Maryrose Onuora, a nutritionist, said that although water temperature does not significantly affect hydration, “very cold beverages” may cause mild digestive discomfort, slow gastric emptying, or lead to bloating in some people.

According to her, individuals prone to migraines should also be cautious, as cold drinks could stimulate nerves in the head and trigger headaches.

“Adults over 40 should be careful when taking very chilled beverages, especially in cold weather, and particularly if they have a history of cardiovascular problems,” Onuora said.

Similarly, Dr John Ogazi, a cardiologist, noted that sudden ingestion of icy beverages could cause temporary changes in heart rate and blood pressure due to nervous system reflexes.

“This response is usually harmless in healthy people, but those with cardiovascular conditions should avoid very cold drinks, particularly during or after strenuous activity,” Ogazi said.

Another medical expert, Dr Festus Onwe, warned that chilled beverages could aggravate tooth sensitivity, thicken mucus during respiratory infections, and worsen nasal congestion.

He advised that people with tooth problems or cardiovascular ailments should avoid very cold drinks to maintain better health.

The experts stressed that healthy adults could continue to enjoy cold drinks in moderation, but older adults and people with related heart diseases should monitor how their bodies respond.

They recommended warm or room-temperature water for those with chronic digestive problems, heart conditions, or frequent colds.

“Hydration is the priority. Whether the water is cool or at room temperature, drink it in the form that is most comfortable and does not cause symptoms,” they said.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, said this in a statement issued on Saturday by the Director, Press and Public Relations, Mr Alaba Balogun.

According to the statement, Pate, who led the government’s delegation, said the administration of President Bola Tinubu holds health workers in high esteem and remains committed to improving their welfare.

He also described the meeting as the first of its kind, commending the dedication of health workers and expressing satisfaction with the level of discussions held.

He added that to ensure effective execution of the agreements, the Federal Government has set up an Inter-Ministerial Committee chaired by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako.

“The committee includes Ms. Daju Kachollom, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and a representative of the Ministry of Labour and Employment and a delegate from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.”
