Presidency slams Peter Obi’s one-term pledge as ‘deceitful’

The Presidency has dismissed Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi’s renewed pledge to serve only one term if elected president, describing it as deceitful and inconsistent with his political history.

In a strongly worded statement on Sunday, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, accused Obi of a pattern of broken promises and questioned his credibility to lead Nigeria.

Obi had, earlier on Sunday, restated via social media that he would serve just one term if elected president — a vow Onanuga claimed lacked sincerity.

“Peter Obi, the liar, is exposed again,” Onanuga wrote on his verified X handle, @aonanuga1956. “You’re neither a Mandela nor a Lincoln or a Kennedy. You sound as if you have never held an elected office before. You sought re-election as Anambra Governor in 2010 and narrowly won courtesy of a divided opposition. Why didn’t you walk away after only one term?”

He further questioned Obi’s performance in Anambra, arguing that the state showed no significant transformation after his eight years in office.

Onanuga also reminded Nigerians of Obi’s past political moves, particularly his defection from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), despite publicly vowing never to leave the party.

“You talk about trust, but how do you expect people to trust someone who can’t keep a simple promise not to leave a political party?” Onanuga stated. “If we’re to make allowance for excuses, you’ll definitely have an excuse to break your one-term vow.”

The renewed political exchange adds to the ongoing tensions between Obi and the Presidency as the 2027 general election draws closer.

Peter Obi reaffirms 4-Year single-term pledge

  • Says It’s Enough to Deliver a ‘New Nigeria’

The 2023 Presidential Candidate of Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, says a one-term of four years is enough for him to accomplish his ambition of a new Nigeria.

According to him, history has shown that positive legacies are in favour of leaders who stay shorter in office.

Writing on his X handle on Sunday, Obi noted that: “One of the greatest American Presidents, Abraham Lincoln, served only four years, yet his legacy endures as a model of principled leadership.

“Another iconic figure, John F. Kennedy, did not even complete a full term, yet his vision and ideals continue to inspire generations.

“In Africa, Nelson Mandela, revered globally as a symbol of justice and reconciliation, chose to serve only one term as President of South Africa, despite immense public pressure to stay longer.

“His decision was a deliberate act of leadership, a statement that power must serve the people, not the self.

“Indeed, history shows that the longer many African leaders remain in power, the more likely they are to be corrupted by it.”

Obi said that longevity in office was not a mark of success, adding: “it is purposeful, accountable service – however brief – that defines true statesmanship.

“It is within this context that I reiterate my vow: I will serve only one term of four years if elected president. And that vow is sacrosanct.

“I am fully aware that the decay in our society has made trust one of the scarcest and most sceptically viewed commodities.

“Many Nigerians, understandably, no longer take politicians at their word. But even in this climate of cynicism, there are still a few whose actions have matched their words-whose integrity is built on verifiable precedent.

“Recently, I became aware of two statements aimed, albeit indirectly, at my vow to serve only a single four-year term.

“One person remarked that even if I swore by a shrine, I still wouldn’t be believed. Another suggested that anyone talking about doing only one term should undergo a psychiatric evaluation.”

Obi said that he understood the basis of people’s distrust because most  politicians do not keep their promises.

“But they forget, or perhaps choose to ignore, that Peter Obi is not cut from that cloth. I have a verifiable track record that speaks louder than speculation. In my political life, my word is my bond.

“When I entered politics in Anambra , I made clear and measurable promises to the people: to improve education and healthcare, to open up rural areas through road construction, and to manage public funds with prudence.

“I fulfilled each of those promises without deviation. I did not swear by a shrine, nor have I been certified mentally unstable as a result of honouring my word.

“My vow to serve only one term of four years is a solemn commitment, rooted in my conviction that purposeful, transparent leadership does not require an eternity,” he said.

The presidential aspirant said that if making such a promise qualified him for psychiatric evaluation, then the mental fitness of those who framed the  constitution, which clearly stipulated a four-year renewable tenure, must also be was questionable.

“I maintain without equivocation: if elected, I will not spend a day longer than four years in office. In fact, I believe that service should be impactful, not eternal.

“We must rebuild trust in our country. I have dedicated my public life to demonstrating that leadership with integrity is not a myth. I have done it before, and I do not intend to betray that trust under any circumstances.

“Forty-eight months is enough for any leader who is focused and prepared to make a meaningful difference. In that time, I intend not merely to make an impression, but to deliver on concrete promises,” he said.

The promises, according to him, include: to sanitise governance system; tackle insecurity through effective and accountable use of national resources; prioritise education, healthcare, poverty alleviation; and catalyse small businesses as engines of growth.

He said that he would dedicate himself to transforming Nigeria from a consuming nation into a productive one, with agriculture, technology and manufacturing replacing rent-seeking and waste.

“These are not utopian dreams. They are realistic, actionable goals that are achievable within four years.

Peter Obi denies defection to PDP, reaffirms commitment to ADC

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has dismissed reports suggesting he is set to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing the claims as false and misleading.

In a statement released on Tuesday by his media team in Abuja, Obi reaffirmed his political alignment with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), urging the public to disregard any unauthorized statements attributed to him.

The statement, signed by Ibrahim Umar of the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), cautioned against the spread of falsehoods aimed at manipulating public perception.

“Peter Obi has been unequivocal in his position in the ongoing coalition and didn’t need anyone to put words into his mouth,” the statement read.

“He has remained focused on his mission but would not accept anybody attributing a statement to him just to satisfy their devious agenda.”

The former Anambra State governor emphasized that any official communications regarding his political stance or activities would only be disseminated through his verified media office or official social media handles.

“The media office wishes, therefore, to urge the public to disregard any statement purported to come from him outside his media office or his official handle,” the statement added.

Obi has been a key figure in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape and remains vocal on national issues, especially in regard to electoral reforms, good governance, and youth participation in politics.

Tinubu overfeeding Nigerians with false statistics – Peter Obi

Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing his administration of feeding Nigerians with manipulated economic data to conceal the country’s worsening economic conditions.

Obi, in a statement posted on his official X handle on Monday, referenced a campaign remark made by Tinubu during the 2022 presidential electioneering in Delta State, where the then-All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate reportedly dismissed Obi’s emphasis on data and governance metrics.

“In November 2022, while campaigning in Delta State, the then APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, now the President, berated the other presidential candidate—he was ashamed to call his name—saying ‘Na statistics we go chop? All I want is to put food on the table of Nigerians,’” Obi recounted.

Obi argued that, contrary to Tinubu’s promises, Nigerians are now grappling with widespread hunger and economic hardship, with the country ranked among the hungriest nations in the world.

“Now, two years into his 4-year tenure, Nigeria is classified as one of the hungriest nations in the world, with millions of Nigerians not knowing where their next meal will come from,” he said.

The former Anambra State governor further accused the current administration of relying on “wrong statistics” to create a misleading image of economic progress.

“President Tinubu is now overfeeding Nigerians with wrong statistics—from wrong unemployment figures, wrong inflation figures, and now GDP debasing—all to put a positive spin on our deteriorating economic and household conditions,” Obi stated.

Reiterating his philosophy on governance, Obi maintained that effective leadership is rooted in integrity and competence, not propaganda.

“Governance is not a rock science, it’s not a gamble. Like I have always reiterated, it requires sincerity of purpose, character, competence, capacity, and compassion,” he added.

Obi’s comments come amid growing concerns from citizens and economic analysts about rising inflation, food insecurity, and a weakening naira, all of which continue to compound the cost of living crisis in the country.

Abure-led LP gives Peter Obi 48 hours to leave party over coalition

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has given Peter Obi a 48-hour ultimatum to leave the party after he joined the coalition.

Obi was among the frontline politicians who joined the coalition adopting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Wednesday, using their platform to contest the 2027 poll with the sole objective of unseating President Bola Tinubu.

However, the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, in a statement in Abuja, on Thursday, explained that the Labour Party under Abure’s leadership remains vehemently opposed to joining the coalition while dismissing members of the coalition as “power mongers whose only interest was self and not the people.”

The party warned Nigerians that the often mouthed ‘new Nigeria is Possible’ is a ruse and cannot be achieved with the assemblage of old, recycled, desperate and frustrated politicians in the coalition.

Ifoh said the party is aware that all those who mismanaged Nigeria over the years are the ones that gathered themselves in the coalition while noting that desperate politicians can’t birth new Nigeria.

He said, “We are aware of several nocturnal meetings between Peter Obi and some of our members, lobbying them to join him in his new party. We’re also aware that a number of them has refused to defect with him.

“Labour Party has consistently said it is not part of the coalition and therefore, any of our members who is part of the coalition is given within 48 hours to formally resign his membership of the party.

“Labour Party is not available for people with dual agenda, people with deceptive persona. The party will not avail itself to individuals who have one leg in one Party and another leg elsewhere.

“People that in the morning, they will claim to be in the Labour Party and in the evening they are in coalition.

“Nearly 70 percent of Nigerian population are youths who are tired of the old order, tired of gerontocrats deciding their fate. The new Nigeria that the youths are dreaming of, is not what can be realized from what we are seeing in the coalition.

“These people are opportunistic politicians who are only interested in relaunching themselves into circle of power, people who are desperate to continue holding on to power.

“The new Nigeria of our dream can only be realized through Labour Party and the party is willing to lead Nigerians along that trajectory.

“I therefore urge all members of the party to remain loyal and keep the party structure intact ahead of future elections.”
