Oyo court extends interim order protecting PDP national convention

An Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has extended its interim order restraining any interference with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of its National Convention, scheduled for November 15–16 in the Oyo State capital.

Presiding Judge Justice Ladiran Akintola, in a ruling on Thursday, maintained that the interim injunction granted on an ex-parte motion filed by the claimant will remain in effect until Friday, when the substantive case is scheduled for further hearing.

The order effectively shields the opposition party from disruptions ahead of the critical convention, following arguments from counsel representing both parties.

Justice Akintola also ruled on a separate application for joinder filed by another party, stating that it could not be entertained because the affidavit accompanying the motion was unsigned by the deponent.

However, counsel to the defendant, Emmanuel Ukala (SAN), argued that the omission did not invalidate the application, noting that the deponent’s identity was clearly established. The judge held that while the application could not be accepted in its current form, it could be properly refiled.

Speaking after the proceedings, counsel to the claimant, Musibau Adetunmbi (SAN), confirmed that the interim injunction remains valid and enforceable pending the substantive hearing.

“We were about to take the application for joinder when the Court discovered that the affidavit was not signed.

However, the other party has indicated interest to file another one. That is what transpired in court today,” Adetunmbi explained.

The court had earlier allowed the PDP to proceed with its National Convention in Ibadan, following an ex-parte motion seeking to restrain the defendants — Acting National Chairman Umar Iliya Damagum; Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri (on behalf of the National Convention Organising Committee); and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) — from truncating or frustrating the conduct of the event.

The court also directed PDP leadership to strictly adhere to the published guidelines, timetable, and schedule of activities for the convention.

In response, the PDP reaffirmed its commitment to holding the convention as planned, accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to sabotage the event through misinformation and legal distractions.

In a statement, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, PDP National Publicity Secretary, said:

“The National Working Committee, NWC, and the 2025 National Convention Organising Committee of the PDP informs all party members and the general public that the 2025 National Convention of the PDP has not been postponed but will go on as scheduled on Saturday, 15th to Sunday, 16th November, 2025 in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.”

Ologunagba accused the APC of sponsoring false narratives to mislead the public, calling it part of a “failed plot to weaken the opposition and destabilise democracy.”

“We are aware of the plots by the APC to destabilise the opposition and impose a one-party state in the country — a design that will be lawfully resisted,” he added.

PDP will not lose sleep over coalition -Damagum

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it will not lose sleep over the recent coalition that adopted the African Democratic Party (SDP) as platform to contest the 2027 general election.

The party’s Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum stated this at the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Thursday in Abuja.

Damagum said that the PDP remained the only party ready to take back power in 2027.

According to him, PDP remained the party with the structure, national acceptability, and legacy capable of bearing the weight of great nation building.

“ I must address the matter of a so-called coalition recently formed, which includes some defecting members of our party.

“On this issue, I am pleased to report that this political experiment is nothing to lose sleep over.

“They say, a bird in hand is worth two in the bush. Some persons have recently learned this truth in the most uncomfortable way.

“Many who jumped on the coalition bandwagon have already returned to our fold. Some even claimed they never left and merely attended a meeting, we accept their confessions without prejudice.

“Let me add that, this reversal is not limited to PDP members alone. Individuals from other political parties who initially joined this coalition have realised that the venture is ill-fated and their swift return is proof of this,” Damagum said.

The Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum, Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, said that the party sympathised with those, who out of impatient left the party, adding that the party door was still opened for them to return.

“This is not time for calling names. This is not time for abuses .

“We sympathise with those who became impatient and left but certainly they will understand and we will still leave the door ajar for them to come in when they wish to, within a time limit.

“We will not continue to condone indiscipline in this party, because indiscipline is what brought us these challenges.

“Definitely, the party has shown resilience, and the governors are going through a lot of challenges, just like the NWC.

“We will continue to express confidence in the organs of the party,” he said.

Mohammed commended members of the party’s NWC, who had shown magnanimity by agreeing to go earlier before the end of their tenure .

“They have shown that at least they are with us and we should always appreciate that, because if everyone becomes dogmatic, we are not going to where we want,” Mohammed said.

PDP inaugurates 39 new BoT members

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday inaugurated 39 new members of it’s Board of Trusteees (BoT).

The BoT Chairman, Sen. Adolphus Wabara, while inaugurating the new members at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, said that they were nominees of states and zones.

Wabara said that the nomination of the new members was based on their dedication, experience and unwavering loyalty to the party.

He described the occasion as not only a celebration of a new beginning, but also a reaffirmation of collective commitment to the values and principles of PDP.

The BoT chairman urged the new members to consider their appointments as a call to service and uphold the integrity, unity and vision of the party as they strived for a prosperous and democratic country.

“Your role as members of the board is not only to guide and support the leadership of the party but also to act as a stabilising force in times of challenges and uncertainties.

“Today’s inauguration is particularly significant as we prepare to navigate the evolving political landscape and work tirelessly to restore PDP as the foremost party in Nigeria.

“The task ahead is demanding, but with unity, determination and unwavering commitment to the principles of democracy, we shall overcome,” he said.

“Let us continue to work together to uphold the vision of our founding fathers and build a stronger, more inclusive and more progressive PDP,” he said.

Speaking earlier. the acting PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum, congratulated the new members, saying that the party would be looking forward for more members on the BoT.

Damagum, represented by the acting National Secretary, Setonji Koshoedo, assured that the National Working Committee would continue to support the board.

Speaking on the appointment, a new BoT member, Jones Onyeriri, said that the composition of  the board was a reflection of the party’s strength.

“It isn’t a big problem for some people that are defecting to other parties; even Jesus Christ, at a time, had some of his disciples who defected.

“So, for me, it is a sign that we are nearer to our crown. We have taken over and still strong.

“Nobody is sabotaging the party. Please trust me on this, as anyone that is doing that is already out of the party,” Onyeriri said.

Another new BoT member, Eddy Olafeso, said that the inauguration of the board was a regeneration of the glorious past, pledging that they would work together to ensure that the party continued to function as a strong opposition with new ideas, new people and new orientation.

“With the quality of leadership and the heritage of the past, we can make Nigeria better than it is today,” he said.

Asked why he resigned his position as Vice-Chairman, South-West when he went to contest for Ondo governorship election, Olafeso said that he did that as a democrat and loyal member of the party.

“There’s no reason for me to hold the party down. If I want to go for another position, I must leave that position as directed by the constitution. Things will work better.

“Discipline is part of democracy; commitment is part of democracy. We must adjust to the way we want to act.

“I did the needful; I’m loyal to my party. I can’t take my party to court. I’ll continue to serve it and do my best to solve the problems within the party,” Olafeso said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that other members inaugurated included: Labaran Maku, Ibrahim Shekarau, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Samuel Ortom and Nimota Ibrahim.
