APC is accommodating ‘displaced politicians’ – Ndume

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has no choice but to accept ”displaced politicians” from other parties in the wake of rising defections, Sen. Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has said

Ndume said this at the Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe’s 6th Annual Award Lecture 2025(121-Posthumous Birthday Celebration)themed “The Power of Pan-African unity, Strengthening Nigeria’s Role in African Integration and development”in Abuja.

Reacting to the statement of former Governor of Niger, Mu’azu Aliyu ,saying that the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) has successfully removed the cancer destroying the party by suspending some members, Ndume called for unity in the interest of Nigeria.

“I wish you good luck. You said that you have removed the cancer. I do not know whether it is too late or your patient will be revived.

“We in APC have no choice but to accommodate our displaced politicians that are trooping into APC. Our president is a leader and that comes to the topic of today. What we need is that charity begins at home. Let us be united.”

Ndume stressed the need to for politicians to be behind the leadership of President Bola Tinibun to move the country forward through unity.

According to Ndume, other parties in the political scenario that were supposed to be either the opposition or the minority are concentrating on picking over power which is yet to come.

“We far away from 2027 yet the PDP are gathering in Ibadan to say they want to throw away APC. Wait until 2007.

“Come and contribute to the success of the government but they are saying that they want to come into APC.

“We opened the door. In fact, I warned that APC is being overloaded and when you have a ship and you have loaded cargo, most of them empty, then there are chances you will capsise and if it capsises, you the owner of the ship will be in a bigger problem. That is why we find ourselves, “he said.

Ndume said that the PDP is not comfortable playing the minority or the opposition role.

He said that the leadership of APC went out of its way to ask them to come over.

“But when your brother is displaced because of crisis in his party and he knocks at your door, will you leave the door closed or you open it for him? So that is what is happening to us.

“So when they come ;as we get them into APC, they are not contributing anything. They do not say anything. They just sit down and be part of it.”

Earlier, Aliyu, who is also the Chairman of the 2025 National Planning Committee of the Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe’s 6th Annual Award Lecture condemned the mass dedection in political parties to APC.

Aliyu warned, ”believe me, if we make the mistake of creating a one-party state in Nigeria, we will pay for it.

“So it is good that we give an alternative to people, but that does not say that if people decide to go one way, we must really accept it.

“There was a time when PDP had up to 28 governors in this country and nobody cried foul. But one can cry foul when you see your governor has been taken away either by bribe or by intimidation.

“The constitution of the country says you cannot go to another party with the mandate of another party and yet we are not following that rule.”

Aliyu said this mandated PDP to go to Ibadan to look at what has been happening to the party.

“Like surgeons, we removed the cancer. The cancer that had been part of our party that has crippled the party.

“We hope with that removal of the cancer, the party may be able to move and give Nigerians an option on what to do,”he said.

Also speaking, Prof.Tijani Mohammad-Bande,President of the 74th session of the UN  General Assembly (UNGA),and Chairman of the Occasion, called for the need to strengthen the bonds of unity in Nigeria and Africa.

Mohammad-Bande urged politicians to walk in the footsteps of Nnamdi Azikiwe as politicians with the interest of the nation before anything.

“Being a ceremonial president in the 60s, and then putting a big fight to become the executive president. Through it all, he maintained his relationships with all Nigerians, which is important.

“Nothing will happen, and Nigerians must hear this, we can make no progress if we do not push to our purposeful unity.

“Today, one tweet from an individual of an institution, and we begin to abuse ourselves. I mean, how do we get to this?”

Mohammad-Bande explained that the role of Nigerians should be in bringing development, justice, and democracy on the African continent just like Zik and other founding fathers did.

“I insist that Nigerians need to know what our founding fathers meant. They fought, they quarrelled, but they stood for Nigeria, which we thought is important,”he said.

“If you check at the history of Niger, most of the Governors were anointed at the point of election.

“This is the first time we are having a Governor who grew through the process of politicking.”

The APC chieftain recalled that Bago was elected as a member of the National Assembly for three executive times.

“The silver solidified the bronze. Both ended with the golden position of the governorship of the state.

Shettima, Akpabio, Abbas, others storm Enugu as Mbah, others, set to join APC

Enugu State’s capital city is agog as all is now set for Gov. Peter Mbah and his political appointees to join the All Progressives Congress, APC, on Tuesday.

Mr Uche Anichukwu, the Senior Special Assistant to Mbah on External Relations, stated this in a statement on Tuesday in Enugu.

According to him, to receive Mbah into the party are the Vice President, Sen. Kashim Shettima; President of the Senate, Sen. Godswill Akpabio and Speaker, House of Representatives, Mr Tajudeen Abbas.

Others are the APC National Working Committee (NUC) led by the National Chairman of the party, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, governors as well as ministers, federal lawmakers and appointees, among others.

Anichukwu quoted various critical segments of the state as well as Ohanaeze Ndigbo to have thrown their weight behind Mbah’s decision to move into the APC.

He said that the former Chairman of the party in the state, Mr Augustine Nnamani maintained that PDP had itself to blame for precipitating the mass exodus from the party in Enugu State.

The chairman said that the party “mistreated and betrayed the people of the South East” and Gov. Mbah by its failure to recognise Udeh-Okoye as the National Secretary in line with established tradition in the party.

“The PDP chose a few people in Abuja over and above the South East. Mbah has exited as spelt out in their region’s communique in May to leave the party if its choice was not respected,” he added.

He regretted that the crisis in the PDP and injustice to the region had cost the party one of the best performing governors presently in Nigeria and reduced the PDP from controlling the five South East states to losing everything.

The governors aide added that Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Enugu State Chapter, equally applauded Mbah, “for taking the bold step of joining the ruling APC”.

According to him, this decision is both thoughtful and timely, considering the compelling need to attract more federal government projects to Enugu State.

He said the statement signed by Ohanaeze’s Vice President General representing Enugu State, Prof. Fred Eze and the National Treasurer, Dr. Peter Aneke, the apex Igbo socio-cultural body, reiterated its commitment for the zoning arrangement in the state.

“We remain committed to upholding the long-standing zoning tradition for the office of the Governor, in the spirit of equity, fairness, and justice in Enugu State,” the statement read.

Anichukwu also quoted the Chairman, Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Samuel Asadu, saying that Mbah had earned national acclaim and the trust of the people by his “trailblazing performance and grassroots-oriented development in the last 26 months.

“Therefore, the traditional rulers and people of Enugu State have absolute trust in his judgement. We wish him the best as he chats this new political course because it is rooted in the good of Enugu State. it is all about the people.

“The Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Enugu State chapter, Mr Okechukwu Edeh, expressed the readiness of the people to move in the direction of the governor.

“As we have said earlier, Gov. Peter Mbah is the political party Enugu State knows today. Besides, we believe that this is a wise decision.

“When it was stated earlier that we would chart a new political course when our voices no longer counted in the other political party,” ALGON chairman stated.

Why our party rejected Adeleke’s alleged defection plans, by Osun APC

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected claims made by the leadership caucus of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the alleged plans by Governor Ademola Adeleke to defect to the APC.

In a strongly worded statement signed by the state APC Chairman, Sooko Tajudeen Lawal, and released on Tuesday, the party dismissed the communique issued by the PDP caucus, signed by Governor Adeleke and 27 other chieftains, as deceptive and misleading. The APC insisted Adeleke was never accepted into the party because he was identified early on as “a trojan horse,” “a political liability,” and a potential threat to the integrity of the party.

“The Osun public knows that it was the fear of a looming defeat in the 2026 election that drove the governor to seek asylum in the APC. His approach was treated with the caution it deserved,” the statement read.

The APC accused Adeleke of presiding over what it described as a decaying PDP structure in the state, alleging that the party has lost its moral compass since the governor took office. It also claimed that credible politicians had continued to defect from the PDP to the APC in protest against what it termed the “brutal hijack” of the party by the Adeleke dynasty.

The statement further challenged the PDP’s claim of popularity in the state, asking whether the party consulted students of the University of Ilesa, who are reportedly being charged N1.5 million per session, or the general public, whom it claimed are angry over the government’s alleged N13 billion expenditure on luxury vehicles for political aides, instead of improving public infrastructure.

The APC also cited the case of over 32,000 job applicants who were allegedly duped under the guise of teaching recruitment, accusing the Adeleke administration of mismanaging close to N1 trillion within 30 months.

Lawal questioned why the PDP would expect the APC to accept individuals allegedly under investigation by the EFCC and ICPC for misappropriating local government funds, or those allegedly involved in the killing of APC members during the 2023 elections.

“Those who rejected Adeleke’s defection bid saw it for what it was: a desperate move to escape the people’s wrath in 2026. You cannot abuse President Bola Tinubu publicly in Osun and run to Abuja pretending to be his ally,” the statement continued.

The APC also took a swipe at Adeleke’s economic policies, accusing him of hoarding resources instead of using increased federal allocations to improve healthcare, agriculture, and public welfare in the state.

The party praised the people of Osun who, it said, came out in large numbers to celebrate what it called “the blocking of Governor Adeleke’s unholy attempt” to join the APC.

“This is payback time from Osun people, who have endured misgovernance, high-handedness, and corruption,” Lawal stated. “Let Governor Adeleke stop complaining and await the people’s verdict in August 2026.”

The development marks a deepening of tensions between the two leading political parties in Osun as the state gears up for what is expected to be a fiercely contested 2026 governorship election.
